Train a Golden Retriever - 3 Commands Your Golden Retriever Must Know

You love your adorable Golden Retriever so much that you want him to be with you all the time. You simply cannot get enough of your furry little pal that you want him with you when you're strolling in the park, when you're relaxing on the beach, or when you are simply reading a good book in your front porch. Ahhh...that does paint a good picture, doesn't it? You and your golden old pal under the sun.

But as you may have already learned, the actual situation of taking an untrained pup for a quick stroll is not a piece of cake. In fact, it could be a pain in the backside if you are an impatient person like me. You should know that even the friendliest of all pups still require training. They are animals and although they might look pleasant, they are not born obedient. You have to train your golden retriever so you will live side-by-side harmoniously.

There are bazillions of tricks to teach your golden retriever but if this is your first time, then I suggest you focus with the 4 basic commands -SIT, LIE and HEEL. Do not worry! Golden Retrievers are one of the most intelligent breeds so it is likely that he'll grasp your instructions in just a few sessions.

To train a Golden Retriever, all you'll ever need is a bag of treats and a bucket full of patience. The treats are used to lead, lure, and reward your pup. One he sees treats, he would get excited and motivated to follow your instructions.

Sit. This is rather easy but if it is your first time, it could be really challenging. First, you have to stand your pup in front of you and say 'sit'. Then, you tease him with some treats and move it slowly down to his shoulders. Slowly push his bottom to the ground until he is in a good sitting position. Praise him and give him the treats. Make sure you mention the word 'sit' a lot of times so it would register in his brain.

Lie. This is usually the next command to teach after Sit. Have your Golden Retriever sit on front of you and show him some treats. Hold the treats firmly and slowly move it towards the floor. He will then start to go down to get the treat. Again, repeat the word "Lie" so he would connect the word to the action.

Heel. If you want to take your pup on the streets, then you better teach him to heel or follow you when you walk. Start by positioning your pup on your left side, with both of you facing the same direction. Walk a few steps and if he won't follow, show him some treats. He will then be lured by these treats and start following you. Repeat until he gets used to the routine.

These are very basic commands but they are probably the most important. Once you've done all these three, you are ready to level up and teach him more commands and tricks. Good luck!
