Taking Care of Your New Bloodhound

If you have done your research on your new dog, you already know that taking care of a new Bloodhound puppy can be very trying on your patience and you have very little time for yourself once the training comes into play.

Several items that are a big concern with Bloodhound owner when taking care of your new pup as follows:

Keep their eyes clean. Bloodhounds get yucky eyes daily and should be cleaned out regularly.
Take your new puppy to the vet and have a professional check him/her out. They are the professionals. They know exactly what to look for.
Ears. Now this is a biggie. Clean their ears at least once a week. Since they are so long and droopy, they will get them into everything, food, water, dirt, just about anything that they smell their ears will be in it. Brush your dog once a week to keep their coat clean and shiny.
Nails need trimmed every two weeks. Once you miss a nail appointment you'll quickly discover why they need trimmed so frequently. They can scratch you very easily by pawing at you. They don't mean to hurt you they just want something like a lot of love.
Ask your vet when feeding your new dog what he would recommend and how much to feed them. They grow very fast and you don't want them to outgrow their bones by feeding too much. Keep their bowl slightly elevated to avoid Torsion or Bloat. This is a major medical problem in Bloodhounds. The causes of this condition is unclear. To learn more you can contact the American Bloodhound Club and they have a pamphlet that will help you.
If your Bloodhound has to have a medical procedure done which requires them to be put under any anesthesia, let your vet know to not give them the recommended dose per pound they would normally because bloodhounds require less, so have your vet start with a lesser dose. The use of a barbiturate anesthesia is not recommended in the Bloodhound.
